      ARTIST:

      Local Photographer Leslie Sternlieb

"The photos on view, shot with either a Leica CL or Q2 Monochrom, represent my most current work, all of which were taken either in my Coral Gables backyard or somewhere nearby. I think of them as little landscapes—beguiling worlds brought close with macro lenses. I recently began photographing botanicals, and am especially intrigued by the magic that happens when shooting fairly wide open to create sharp/soft focus distinctions, often bringing the dreamy Leica bokeh into play. Although I may render a subject literally, I’ve been moving toward more abstract forms, and have even indulged in a little intentional camera movement to offer painterly (or ghostly) romance. Convinced that beauty may be mined from nearly everything, I’ve taken on the challenge of shooting all life stages of plants and flowers—from vibrant blooms to elegant decay." - Leslie Sternlieb

    • Leslie Sternlieb worked for many years in South Florida as a writer and editor, and, until her retirement, directed publications for The Wolfsonian–Florida International University, a museum of design and decorative arts in Miami Beach. She received her bachelor of science in journalism, magna cum laude, in 1979 from Boston University. In 2010, Sternlieb moved to New York, but returns to her hometown of Coral Gables seasonally. After working in media relations and the not-for-profit world, Sternlieb reinvented herself in 2016 as an entrepreneur and began her online boutique, Exquisite Eons, which sells dinosaur-themed products exhorting people to “Be Positively Prehistoric.”

As a photographer, she is mostly self-taught. For her eighth birthday, she received a Brownie Fiesta roll-film camera. By the time she reached middle school, she was reading every photo magazine in the newsstand, and her parents gifted her with her first SLR, a Konica Autoreflex A. When her middle school launched an independent study program she opted out of the then-required Home Ec. classes in favor of photography, enabling her to use the darkroom in the boys’ wood shop studio. Her high school portfolio was awarded a scholarship prize at the Florida State Fair, among other awards.

Over the years she has participated in classes at the Santa Fe Workshops and Maine Media Workshops, studying with Sam Abell, Susan Burnstine, Kristi Odom, and Eddie Soloway.

Her connection with Leica cameras began around 1993, when she worked in public relations at Miami City Ballet. Realizing the unique opportunity at hand, she shot performances with her Nikon F2 from the wings. Being discreet was essential, so on the recommendation of a friend she got her first Leica camera, an M6.

Having a journalism degree, it was natural for her to gravitate to documentary photography. But the human condition ultimately gave way to the allure of the natural world, most especially birds and botanicals.

She now resides in Rhinebeck, New York, though her love for her native Florida remains steadfast, whether it’s the Everglades, the Wakodahatchee Wetlands, or her own backyard.
